Cyprus Music Archive is putting together a series of three interactive workshops on ethnographic documentary, led by documentary director David Hands.
The series offers a practical introduction to ethnographic documentary for participants with little or no filmmaking experience. The emphasis is on doing: how to move from an idea to a structured, achievable observational project, grounded in ethical awareness and visual clarity.
Session 1: Representation & Power examines what distinguishes ethnographic documentary from general non-fiction media, focusing on authorship, perspective, and the construction of meaning.
Session 2: Method & Relationship addresses research design, access, trust-building, consent, and how to translate a topic into a realistic filming plan using minimal equipment, including smartphones.
Session 3: Form & Meaning explores framing, sequence, and sound as storytelling tools, demonstrating how visual and sonic choices shape interpretation without reliance on explanatory narration.
Each session stands alone, while together they provide a coherent pathway from concept to execution. Participants leave with practical frameworks they can immediately apply in their own contexts.
The workshops are offered in Greek, and are addressed to people with little or no experience in filming and/or documentary making.
