Beran Djemal is the Turkish Cypriot Team Lead on CMA’s AEIF-funded project From Oral to Recorded and Disseminated: Collecting the Folk Songs, Poetry, and Oral Traditions of Cyprus.
Beran holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Middle East Technical University and a Postgraduate Diploma in International Conflict and Cooperation from The University of Stirling, Scotland.
Until recently, she worked as a Lobbying and Advocacy Expert at the Universal Patients’ Rights Association in Nicosia, Cyprus. Since 2016, her work has focused on developing project ideas, writing project applications, and implementing advocacy and lobbying strategies to improve patients’ rights in the northern part of Cyprus.
Prior to this, Beran spent two years as an Editor at KP Daily News and four years at the Cyprus Community Media Centre, funded by UNDP, where she served as an Outreach Officer. Her responsibilities included fostering improved intercommunal relations, building connections with various civil society organizations and activists from both sides of the island, developing training content for media production, and enhancing the media and communication capacity of civil society.
Additionally, Beran has collaborated with international media organizations, including ITV, ARD, Al Jazeera, SSG/SSR, and others, as a Fixer and Translator. She has also contributed to two international feature-length films, The Ghost of Peter Sellers and Finding Hendrix, and worked as a translator for the documentary Missing Fetine.
Beyond her professional work, Beran actively engages in the civil society and media sectors as a member of the Steering Committee for various human rights projects. She is deeply committed to promoting peace-building efforts and advocating for the rights of marginalized groups in Cyprus.
Beran also has a strong interest and some experience in scriptwriting and digital storytelling.
